DELTA COUNTY MARRIAGE RECORDS
In a project that has taken years to complete, volunteers from the Delta County Genealogical Society copied the Delta County Marriage Records from 1862 to 2014 as recorded in the official records of the Delta County Clerk’s Office. These records include these categories: Name, Age, Hometown, Father, Mother, Date, and Location of Wedding. As there are two people involved in each marriage, there are two records for each, an “A” record for the groom, and a “B” record for the bride. While occasionally we felt that some information was incorrect, we have recorded it just as it appears in the official record books. These books may be consulted at the County Clerk’s Office for more information. Volunteers read, copied, typed and proof read each book.
This project would not have been possible without the cooperation of Delta County Clerk Nancy Kolich and her staff, or without the encouragement and hard work of Delta County Commission Chairman, Tom Elegeert. Chairpersons for the project were Naida Standing and Tom Elegeert.
Notes on the data:
It is not necessary to fill in all the blanks to make a search. The last name of either bride or groom, and a date should be enough to get to the record.
Bride/Groom: Select the proper designation for the name you are searching.
Name: Last name is usually sufficient, unless you are seeking a very common name, e.g., “Johnson”, in which case a first name or initial is useful. No punctuation is used, so don’t include commas or periods. Records will be listed by date, with the earliest first, so you may have to scroll through a number of names to find the record you are looking for. Remember that some names also may be contained within other names, e.g., searching for “Berg” will also bring up “Sandberg” so you may need to add an initial, or first name. Also names change over the years, so try alternate spellings, e.g., “Nelson, Nilson, Nelsen.”
Age: It is not necessary to enter anything in this space for searches.
Place of Birth: This is the place of birth for the person, and is not needed in making a search.
Father: These names are entered as they appear in the record. “Unknown” means that the name is not listed in the official record.
Mother: These names are entered as they appear in the record. “Unknown” means that the name is not listed in the official record.
Date: Date for the wedding is given on the groom’s record. On the bride’s record is listed the official who performed the wedding. Some abbreviations used: MN= Minister, CP= Catholic Priest, JP=Justice of the Peace; MG=Magistrate; MY= Mayor, etc.
Location: City, county, or township where the wedding was held.
